A young Canadian woman was one of the victims of an avalanche in Zermatt. The 25-year-old was one of three victims who succumbed in the accident on Easter Monday. In total, 17 people have died in avalanches in Switzerland this winter. [article in French]

Have you ever wondered how and why one of the NHL’s biggest current stars, Auston Matthews, started his professional playing career in Switzerland? The main factors for this occurrence were an NHL super agent very familiar with Swiss hockey and the Swiss league (as he had played there himself), the player lockout, family support and Auston Matthews’ late birthday. So instead of playing college hockey in the USA he joined ZSC Lions to play a season of pro hockey in Switzerland.

Given the recent surge in grocery prices in Canada BlogTO decided to do a comparison between Canada and the “European country ranked number one for the most expensive groceries in the world”, Switzerland. The budget allocated for this comparison was CHF 100 spent by a Tiktoker at a Lidl store in Switzerland. The same items from the influencer’s shopping list were bought at a Toronto area Walmart. Not surprisingly the overall cost of the Swiss groceries was higher than the Canadian groceries, albeit not by much (CAD 152.36 at Lidl vs CAD 138.41 at Walmart). Some items that were significantly cheaper in Switzerland include: oranges, garlic, peppers, passionfruit, Emmentaler, tissues. The top 10 most beloved train itineraries in the world, according to merkur.de and insuremytrip, include two voyages in Switzerland (Bernina and Glacier Express) and two in Canada (the Rockymountaineer and the Canadian, from Toronto to Vancouver). Will there be a vote on Swiss neutrality? According to the Journal de Montréal this could very well be the case. A right-wing nationalist Swiss group named Pro Suisse is about to submit an initiative supported by 140,000 signatures. The initiative is seen as anti-EU and aims to solidify Switzerland’s neutrality by preventing it from joining defence alliances. [in French]

A list of the best hospitals in the world includes many hospitals in both Switzerland and Canada. Toronto (Toronto General) and Zurich (Unispital) each have of one in the top 10 of this prestigious list of 250. In total there are 10 Swiss and 10 Canadian hospitals in the list. The list does not disclose the methodology used to determine the ranking.

The compostable Migros coffee pods may become available in Canada soon. Swiss grocery chain Migros has had an innovative coffee pod on the market called Coffee B since the fall of 2022. The pods contain neither plastic nor aluminium and can just be thrown in the compost. The American company Keurig Dr Pepper has acquired the rights to distribute the pods in the USA, Canada and Mexico. [in German]
