Company History (English)

In 1884, Emma Staufer and Gottfried Plüss launched their company Plüss-Staufer (later named Omya) in Oftringen, Switzerland, to produce high-quality window putty made from chalk and linseed oil. This early innovation responded to the growing demand for larger plate glass windows, which required stronger, higher-quality materials.

Since then, Omya has focused on using high-quality minerals to address evolving challenges. For more than 140 years, innovation has remained central to the company, applying expertise in minerals and chemistry to solve customer and societal challenges.

The company’s values—modesty, courtesy, integrity, and perseverance—have been embedded over many years and provide a shared foundation for its 9,000 employees worldwide. Omya continues to build on its achievements while maintaining a forward-looking mindset rooted in its passion for minerals and chemistry.
